CHICAGO’S HISTORIC MOTOR ROW DISTRICT 1905 – 1936

The Chicago Historic Motor Row District, is home to the largest, intact, early “motor colony” in the United States. Primarily located on South Michigan Avenue, it was designated as a Chicago Landmark in 2000, and added to the US National Register of Historic Places in 2002. At its peak, as many as 116 different makes of automobiles — including Ford, Buick, Elgin, Hudson, Cadillac, Detroit Electric, Locomobile, Marmon, & Studebaker — were sold and serviced on Motor Row! During this program, you’ll learn about the early development of the American automobile industry; the topflight architects who designed the elaborate automobile showrooms on Motor Row; several of the automobile companies located there; and the automobiles that you would find for sale in those showrooms.
