Throughout our Catholic senior living communities, we believe the beginning of a new year is a time filled with hope and possibilities, making it the perfect occasion to set intentions and visualize dreams. For older adults, creating a vision board can be both a reflective and uplifting experience. When shared with grandchildren, it becomes a joyful bonding moment that bridges generations.
Our Franciscan Ministries team explores the significance of a New Year’s vision board, provides six steps to create one and highlights the benefits of this creative hobby for both older adults and their young companions.
A New Year vision board is a visual tool used to represent aspirations, goals and dreams for the coming year. It typically consists of a collection of images, words and symbols that serve as daily reminders of what one hopes to achieve. The process of creating a vision board encourages individuals to reflect on their past experiences and set future intentions, fostering a sense of purpose and direction. Whether displayed prominently in a home or tucked into a personal space, a vision board is a constant source of motivation and inspiration.
Creating a vision board begins with gathering supplies such as magazines, scissors, glue, colored paper and markers. Encourage grandchildren to bring their favorite magazines or drawings to add a personal touch. Set the stage by creating a cozy workspace with enough room for everyone to spread out their materials. A warm cup of cocoa and gentle background music can enhance the atmosphere, making the space feel inviting and comfortable for everyone involved.
Before embarking on this creative venture, take a moment to reflect on the past year. You can take the lead by sharing stories of triumphs and lessons learned while encouraging your grandchildren to talk about their favorite memories, like a birthday party or a school play. This reflection fosters understanding and appreciation between generations. It also sets the foundation for setting meaningful goals, reminding everyone of where they have been and where they hope to go.
Setting goals and intentions is the heart of the vision board creation process, where dreams begin to take shape. You may consider personal growth, health and social aspirations, while children may focus on fun experiences, learning or friendships. With gentle guidance, help them articulate their thoughts. Together, you and your grandchildren can explore shared goals that strengthen your bond, such as planning more family gatherings or starting a garden together.
Next, the fun of browsing through magazines and papers begins. Look for images and words that resonate with each person’s goals and dreams. For instance, a sunrise might symbolize new beginnings, while a picture of a book could represent the joy of reading. Encourage creativity and individuality—it’s okay if the selection looks eclectic, reflecting each person’s unique vision. Finally, don’t hesitate to incorporate symbols or quotes, adding layers of personal meaning.
With all the ingredients collected, it’s time to assemble the vision board. Arrange images and words on a sturdy poster board, experimenting with layouts. Once satisfied, secure everything in place with glue or tape. This step invites collaboration as grandparents and grandchildren exchange ideas on design and placement. The process is as much about sharing and listening as it is about creativity, allowing personal stories to intertwine across the board.
Once the boards are complete, come together to share and discuss each one. You can explain the significance behind your choices, offering wisdom and insight, while grandchildren can express their hopes in their playful, vibrant ways. This sharing session strengthens the connection between generations, strengthening understanding and empathy. It’s also an opportunity for laughter, storytelling and mutual encouragement as each person’s vision for the new year is celebrated.
Creating a vision board provides a multitude of benefits that enhance the well-being of both older adults and children. Firstly, it strengthens the bonds between generations as they share dreams and collaborate creatively. This program fosters a sense of camaraderie and connection that lasts beyond the crafting session.
The creative process stimulates cognitive and motor skills in older adults, keeping the mind engaged and active. Cutting, arranging and gluing require coordination and concentration, while the reflective aspect of setting goals exercises memory and critical thinking. For grandchildren, creating vision boards nurtures communication and imagination. It gives them the chance to articulate their thoughts and express themselves artistically, boosting confidence and language skills. The presence of their grandparents adds an extra layer of support and validation, fostering self-esteem and resilience.
