Caring for People Since 1894, and Still Writing Our Story
Our story began in 1894, when Josephine Dudzik, later known as Mother Mary Theresa, arrived in Chicago as a young Polish immigrant and saw great need among the aged, infirm and poor.
Moved to action, she founded the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago and established St. Joseph Home, the first Catholic nursing home in Chicago. Her vision was rooted in compassion, faith and the belief that every person deserves dignity and care.
More than 130 years later, that same spirit continues to guide Franciscan Ministries.
What began as one home has grown into a network of Catholic senior living communities and service organizations across Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and New York, each carrying forward a legacy of serving with joy.
However, though we honor our heritage, we are not standing still. We are carrying Mother Theresa’s mission into a new era, one filled with innovation, exploration and modern lifestyles that meet the needs of today’s families and tomorrow’s seniors.

Franciscan Ministries expresses its mission in many ways, each one grounded in service and carried forward with joy.
Our senior living communities offer independent living, assisted living, memory care, rehabilitation and skilled nursing across Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. These Franciscan communities are where daily life unfolds, connection grows, support is close and everyday living is honored.
Care also extends beyond our campuses. Through home and community-based services, families receive support in familiar surroundings. Charitable ministries such as St. Jude House and the Madonna Foundation reflect a longstanding commitment to protecting, uplifting and educating those who need it most.
When residents or associates face unexpected hardship, programs like The Gift of Care and Helping Hands provide quiet reassurance. Outreach initiatives and local community service efforts continue the tradition of responding wherever help is needed.
Our experience in senior living and post-acute care is also shared with other mission-driven organizations through Franciscan Advisory Services, strengthening the broader communities we serve.
